  1. lab050

Not much to say at this point really. I’m sure there will be plenty to talk about in the coming weeks and months but for now I just wanted to put it out there that after taking the past week for myself and my family, starting from tomorrow I will be doing by utmost best and giving everything I’ve got to kick ass alongside the other members of the Lab050 team in Groningen. I’m looking forward to getting started! (more…)

  2. Yourhosting Marketing

Today is my last day at Yourhosting. After debating with myself on whether or not I should or shouldn’t leave, I eventually decided that the decision was actually an easy one and chose for, what ultimately is most important in my life right now; my family. So after 3 solid years of working with some of the coolest and brightest group of colleagues I’ve ever come to know and work with, it is with mixed emotions that I resign from my role as webmaster, front-ender and designer from Marketing. Because on the one hand I’m glad I’ve been able to land myself a new and exciting challenge which is much, much closer to home (more on that in a future post), but of course the down side of leaving and having to part ways goes hand in hand with making these kinds of choices. 3. In case you didn’t already know, I’m all about planning. I’m a big planner, regardless of the situation or project. Not in a stifling way, but just so that I know what to expect and what’s coming up over the horizon. My day, my week, my finances, I could be going on vacation and I’d still need to plan it all out. If I’m going on a road trip, I’ll need to strategically plan the loading of the luggage in the trunk, making sure it’s stowed as efficiently as possible, while still being able to reach back and get things if and when necessary. The navigation will have been set days before and double checked, and the car will have had fluid changes and tire pressure checks long before the departure day. If by air, I’ll carefully plan the packing of handheld luggage so that things like passports are easily accessible yet secure and that things like inflight entertainment are also packed in order of what-I-might-want-to-do-first. 4. I remember years ago when I first discovered WordPress, how excited and thrilled I was to be able build fully dynamic websites quickly and easily. Need to setup a site quick? No problem, WordPress is good at that, in fact, many web hosting companies offer a simple one click install for those who don’t desire to get into the MySQL/PHP setup. Need extra functionality? Download one of the thousands of plugin that all do the same thing. Need more help? Ask the community or simply Google for tutorials. Possibilities are endless. And over the years, WordPress has ever evolved into so much more than just a blogging tool. It’s the CMS of choice for many web designers, web developers and bloggers for one simple reason; its simplicity and its focus on ever improving usability and ease of use. Within that simplicity however lies perhaps one of it’s biggest drawbacks, notably for web designers and developers; it makes assumptions, and it makes plenty of them. (more…)

  5. As a web designer and front-end developer having worked on many various projects over the years, I’ve come to accept and understand that no two projects are alike. I should rephrase; no two clients are ever alike is what I should say. It’s the reason I don’t make use of a template system when it comes to custom projects. Because when a client pays for a unique website look and feel, it’s what the client’s going to get (at least when they’ve hired me). Client’s are going to have their own unique expectations based on several different factors. To name a few; expectations can be based on what a client wants or needs, what they’ve seen on the web already and what they know (or at least what they think they know). Just read all the entries on the Clients from Hell website and you’ll start to form a picture of how many clueless clients, bosses and managers there are out there. (more…)

  6. BBQ in October

BBQ in October on our roof terrace

It’s summer time in October! This kind of warm, sunny, blue sky, beautiful weather rarely even comes around during the summer months, let alone in the fall! So when the weather man says it’s going to be 25 degrees on a Saturday, you do what any other sane person would do: you have a BBQ!

  7. It’s taken a while. It’s taken a very long while; conceptualizing in my head, on paper, trying things, hating them, starting over, liking it a little more, etc. But that’s the problem when you design something for yourself; you’re insanely critical of your own work and you’ll sooner beat the sanity out of yourself than accept that something is finished or a good idea. But above all, I simply was not being able to create time to spend on v.8. But it’s here and I’m glad it’s done.

The new AbsoluteB.com takes everything I’ve learnt from the past 12 years of designing into account. HTML5, CSS3, SEO, JQuery, IE bug fixes, cross platform compatibility, etc, it’s all in here. (but please, forgive me if you do stumble on any bugs. Just let me know so I can go ahead of fix it.)

With the launch of my new site, I guess it’s only fitting that I acknowledge that it’s time to move on and away from Bonobos. It’s been 2 years of pixel-pushing production work accompanied with some good times and fun, creative colleagues as well as many, many lessons I’ll certainly be taking with me. I’ll be sticking around till my contract which runs out December 1st, unless I find something else before then, in which case I’ll be leaving sooner.

Without turning this first post on the new site into a somber one, it should be said that I’m really excited to discover what’s out there. I haven’t really looked much these past 2 years and all this chatter about the economy being in shambles doesn’t really phase me (yet) so I’m curious to see where I’ll end up and what I’ll even be doing in 3 months. Nothing like going head-first into the unknown!

  8. Time for some R&R

You’ll undoubtedly notice that I haven’t posted much in the past few weeks, let alone post anything that had any sense or value. Things have been incredibly busy at Bonobos since I opted to take on the ICT Manager role along side my current role as designer/front end developer. The past week or so has been the most busy I’ve ever been as I’ve been working hard to get things the way I want them within ICT, plus learning the ropes and undertaking all the responsibilities of my latest undertaking. Patrick, the manager I’m taking over for, was away for a week and so this was an opportunity for me to get my feet (very) wet. I’ll admit that there are plenty of things I could have done smoother and better, but I’ll be bold enough to give myself some credit for doing the job that I’ve done so far. I’ve certainly had to find the balance between taking the time to design and create my visions and utilizing short time spans to create designs that are “good enough”. I know, it’s such a sin as a designer to do anything that way, but as a manager with responsibilities, I have to decide whether my priorities allow me take the time or to deliver so that we as a company can move forward quicker.

As far as I’m concerned, I will do everything I can to maintain my initial role as designer and front end developer along side my new responsibilities rather than bringing on a new designer. Besides the fact that I believe that only I can carry out my vision better than anyone, I also love designing and every aspect of what it means to me too much. No doubt there will be times when I wonder if I’m trying too much, but I can honestly say that I’ll do everything I can do delegate my tasks so that I can focus on what I love and what I do best; creating beautiful graphics and websites in HTML and CSS.

For now though, I will be taking a break and taking a nice long week away in Hungary with my girlfriend. ROADTRIP! I haven’t been on vacation in years, and now, of all times, I think I deserve it more than any other time.
